WildDerby

Following the withdrawal of funding for this service and the departure of Beverley Rhodes, a solid working relationship is being developed with the Parks Department at the City Council through a Green Spaces Forum.

Cattle intrusions through the north fence were a major problem in the early months of the year, and permanent repair to the fence is planned.

Work done on site

  • JANUARY     - Willow cutting by TCV
  • LATE 2012   - Three more disease resistant elms planted by volunteers
  • JUNE            - Two small volunteer working parties cleared paths, balsam pulling and general tidying.

Walks 

  • MAY       - spring bird watch; very successful, 40 species seen. Led by Paul Highman and Keith Hammond.
  • JUNE     - Wild Flower Walk, led by Peter Hill and David Gibbons. A great success, including 4 orchid species in flower.
  • SEPT     - Moth watch, arranged by Felicity Jackson and DaNES.

Open meetings

  • APRIL    - on site. Discussed the possibility of grazing if funding is obtained through a Higher Level Stewardship scheme.

 Surveys

  • Birds           - one new species recorded by Paul Highman; a House sparrow.  Total now 95.
  • Butterflies    - transect completed for 5th successive year by Alan Jones.
  • Flowers       - over 130 species recorded by Peter Hill, including over 40 spikes of Pyramidal orchid.
  • Student studies - of invertebrates, and of Skipper butterfly.

Website

  • Regularly updated by Hans Rieder who has also revised the bird register, and has constructed registers for mammals, butterflies and plants  (the latter by Peter Hill's efforts)
  •  A new leaflet has been produced and printed.
